Listening to this song is like being transported back to the tiny town where I went to college in the mid-winter, when the snow is dirty and the sky is low and grey.
We didn't actually go to college together, or, I guess technically, know each other at all, but when Blake Mills sings Winter Song, especially when he sings, Even when the love's gone, don't I show it?, I imagine myself standing across the street from him, looking at him with steely eyes as the winter wind whips my hair across my face. In this scenario, Blake and I have broken up after a brief but intense week, and as he drives away in his vintage Bronco with this song playing in the background, I'm broken-hearted, but still strong without him.
Or something else less creepily specific.
It's a really good song. - Words by Valerie
