First, this album artwork is outrageous!! This song has a weird psychadelic bite to it that I can't tell if I love or just find a bit irritating. Either way the song is growing on me and has me intrigued to hear more.

I got this track sent to me yesterday. A huge portion of of the stufff I get sent just doesn't fall into my musical taste but BoardWalk fell right in the sweet spot. Hazy, dreamy girl-fronted shoegaze with beautiful guitar work. Yes, yes, and yes!

Boardwalk was formed last summer in Los Angeles, Calif. by Mike Edge and Amber Quintero. Their first self-titled album will be released this year on Stones Throw Records. ENjO!

With so much music coming in and out of my ear holes it is really hard to be loyal to all these talented obscure bands. Once such band has been Tacks, The Boy Disaster. I first heard their song "Frozen Feet" way back in 2006 and fell in love. I have include songs from their first album/Ep Oh, Beatrice on several mixes over the years. They just became a band that I couldn't shake from my head. Their musc became like a weird sonic security blanket that just made me feel better. Thank goodness, back in 2006 I signed up for their newsletter and sometime in 2012 I got an email saying they were working on new material and were going to go the Kickstarter route to get it made. Sign me up. I helped kickstart the album and on Saturday May 11th I got a letter from the band with my download code to their new album Twelve Lion Paws. The wait was worth it! I really love the new album and I think it will soniclly keep me warm and cozy for many years to come. Thanks for coming back. ENjO!

COVER ART:

I was playing around with some cover ideas last week and nothing felt right. A coworker and friend, Emily Sabol, was traveling to Guatemala earlier this week and took the picture of the masks on the wall. The second I saw it, I knew that it was cover worthy. I mean, what else keeps your face more radical than a mask? The black and white boarder made it feel more...80's caveman and the typography was the handset TOBAGO which feels like authentic latin american signage. So, another cover that explores the idea of keeping your face radical. This is a concept I will probably stick with for the next few months. I hope you like it.

Wild Nothing - A Dancing Shell

The weird 80's/90's fusion that's happening in this song is really blowing my mind. It barely resembles a Wild Nothing song so props for the experimentation. And that oboe solo! What?

Two Door Cinema Club - Sun (Dan Lissivik remix)

A nordic viking DJ remixing an indie pop song to sound Tropical. Yep!!

This mix has been haunting me all month. It has been a lot of work scrapping together KYFR mix worthy songs. I had to throw the net wide, but hopefully you'll agree that I caught a narwhal or two.

Bibio - A tout a l'heure

Hands down one of the best songs I have heard this year!!!!!!!! Its weird, basey, dancey and unbelievingly catchy.

Vampire Weekend - Step

This is quickly becoming my fav VW song. PERFECT SUMMER POP!

Peace - Float Forever

The way this song builds is ba-ba-ba-bonkers good!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Under The Earth

This song made me feel like I was spying on Medusa while she was doing some cave cleaning.

COVER ART:

I struggled coming up with an idea this month but in the end forced myself to do something that felt really unatural. I call it Nü90's. I feel like it is a big trend right now and I wanted to give it a try. I wanted to play with the idea of some kind of vortex making a face (stature) radical.I like the mix of patterns and gray vs. color. I did everything in Photoshop, even the type :( Plus, I used tons of bad filters and tools I would never use, ie. Twirl Effect. It took me back to the first time I used Photoshop and just wanted to Filter everything. It feels off to me but hopefully in a cool way. Maybe in the same way that Bill Cosby made wearing obnoxious sweaters cool.

The drums on this song remind a lot of the drums from "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder and that alone is enough for me to like this song but there are numberous other reasons to like this song. ENjO!

KEEPYOURFACERADICAL FEBRUARY 2013 MIX

The mix this month contains 31 songs and about 13 different covers. I fell in love with the art of Stephan Dunlop and borrowed his art to make a unique statement. Why? 1- Thick faux paint-by-number painting style. 2 - Super weird-o pastel color palette. As far as the type goes, I really love horror fonts right now and wanted to do a take that felt more modern. I think adding the perspective and the negative space drips takes the type to a cool combo with the paintings.

SONG HIGHLIGHTS:

• Painted Palms - "Click"

This song is amazing and I pray they come out with an LP this year. It got the most plays this month with "Skyscraper" just behind.

• Small Black - "Free At Dawn"

This sounds like an ending to a movie put I can't put my finger on which one. Neverending Story? Contact? Somebody help. It reminds me of early U2 with synths...but in a good way.

• Elephant - "Skyscraper"

Think Beach House only more epic.

• Lovelier Other - "Hidden Shelters"

This song has a tone that sums up the way I felt about the month of February.

• Vulfpeck - "It Get Funkier II"

Think PBS after-school special funk. 3-2-1 Contact or The Bloodhound Gang. As a bass player this is pure ear candy.

• The Kitchen - "Bill Murray"

I used to play in a couple bands with the guitarist/singer, Rachel Couch during college, but that is not why I think the song is awesome. For fans of Warpaint.
